At 39 years old, after fifteen or so spent working as an employee proposing strongly innovative ideas, for Alessandro Ivaldi, an electrical engineer specializing in computer science, the time has come to take a risk, and to think together with Domenico Giacobino about a new startup: “In April we decided to found Enginius,” explains Alessandro Ivaldi, “a name that brings together engineering and ingenuity. We are a digital consulting company born to develop platforms on the web, we make software that can manage big data, a huge flow of data that flows very quickly.”
“We always start with big data, such as for the X Factor talent show televoting” “We also follow a community that helps people find their soul mates”
ALL quite complex and intangible to the uninitiated. Any practical examples?
“Our consultancies always start from big data for big performances that are used for example for tele-voting, we follow that of X Factor, TV talent show. Then we do consulting for FlirtMaps+, the largest Italian dating community, geo-localized that allows you to find your nearest soul mate, starting from well-defined logics, lifestyle, interests. And then we deal with web advertising, everything that happens before the message reaches the user.”
Do you do behind-the-scenes work all the time, hard to describe?
“What we do is not always seen, but it is the engine that makes things run, for example, for televoting we did not make the site, but the platform that is used to register votes, which is traversed by immense flows; for Dating we helped develop the system that is used to present the correct person.”
The most important areas of Enginius?
“Advertising takes up 55 percent of our revenue, dating 15 percent, another 15 percent is voting, and the remaining 15 percent is trading, i.e., online stock exchange.” Let’s start with advertising, on the web a very different matter than on paper and TV.
The main features?
“It is very targeted, showing different things to different users of the same type of product. The content of the banner, the space that contains the advertising message, is delivered based on the user who is looking. A process that is possible because the Web tracks you, knows you, studies you, knows your tastes. The banner almost never comes by accident, it is tailored to its user.”
A real competition within platforms?
“There used to be a media that conveyed the advertisement well in advance: TV, radio or print; today it is conveyed by the platform, which in about ten thousandths of a second searches for the most suitable banner for the specific user who unsuspectingly, while browsing, triggers a real auction to look for the best offer.”
You are a very young company, your numbers?
“We are small, but with many ideas. We expect to close 2014 at 150 thousand euros in sales, and to grow by 20 percent in 2015, we hired our first employee on call for two months, we hope to keep him in the future.”
